Blackout Poetry
Art and Poetry combine for powerful creativity
North Carolina Curriculum Connections for 4th Grade
English Language Arts Curriculum Connections:
CCSS.ELA.Literacy.RL.4.5: "Explain major differences between poems, drama, and prose, and refer to the structural elements of poems (e.g., verse, rhythm, meter) and drama (e.g., casts of characters, settings, descriptions, dialogue, stage directions) when writing or speaking about a text."
Students will achieve this standard through the smartboard activity as they define "redacted" and blackout poetry. Students must analyze the structural elements of the poems from "A Humument" (see activity page) as well as work to create certain structural elements when writing their own poems. Students discuss themes in multiple activities and must write a poem that fits a theme.
Visual Arts Curriculum Connection:
4.V.1.2: "Apply personal choices while creating art."
4.V.1.5: "Understand how the Principles of Design work in relation to each other. "
Students will apply personal choices in deciding to blackout with whatever medium they so choose. They also may use whatever medium they choose in creating art on top of the blackout section of the text and can create any visual art they would like. Students will explore the balance, emphasis, and variety as principles of design when creating their blackout poetry art.
