Welcome!
You are invited to explore and discover blackout poetry through this site and its resources. You will find an impactful lesson on blackout poetry where students can express their creativity through the scaffolding of an already existent text. Students can watch a video hook depicting the process of creating blackout poetry and the class can use the SmartBoard file to create a blackout poem together. The higher order questions spur conversation and learning among students and the activities involve blackout poetry and it's history. Teachers and students will also find a set of resources for their own use or use in a classroom setting.
Teachers and students, explore this site and its resources! It is based on multiple undergraduate and graduate courses that were part of the teacher education program at Appalachian State University.
The lesson published here is designed for 4th grade students and satisfies North Carolina English and Art standards. The writing examples used in the smartboard files are from NC 4th grade writing samples. Students will learn about blackout poetry, the elements of poetry, and principles of design.
The lesson is based on an assignment from CI 2300 at Appalachian State University
